We have been passionate over the scent of rose for centuries. It is believed that rose fossils have been found dating back 60 to 70 million years and were first cultivated by the Chinese around 500 BC. Queen Cleopatra famously covered her palaces with roses. The scents from her roses triggered many men, especially Marc Anthony. She was a master of aroma therapy as a way to seduce men, which led her to her tragic love story with Mark Anthony. She also used rose water to moisturize the skin and radiate a pleasant feminine scent.
The rose is associated with the Greek, Roman and Phoenican civilizations. They used rose water for their gentile, beautifying, soothing and even healing properties. In cookery, rose water is used in Persian’s recipes and is often added in cakes, teas or coffee in Middle East. In the 10th century AD, a Persian farmer named Avicenna discovered an effective way of distilling essential oils for roses, turning to a whole new chapter in the art of roses. In the 17th century, roses or rose water were considered valuable for exchange rather than money. Rose oil was sometimes called “gold” because for one gram of oil, you need about 10 kilograms of flowers.
In the 19th century, rose scented oils were widely used. Best known are Rosa Damascena that grows mostly in Bulgaria, Turkey and India, and Ros. It is no exaggeration to say that rose is the queen of flowers. It was collected not only by Queen Josephine, the wife of King Napoleon, who had 250 distinct species of roses in her royal garden but also Queen Victoria, who even claimed the Bulgarian rose as her signature scent. The rose is still England’s emblem and can even be found on the Crown Jewels.
