Gin & Tonic
Classic and easy, the gin and tonic is light and refreshing. It is a simple mixed drink that requires just the two named ingredients and a hint of lime, all of which are natural flavor companions. The best gin and tonic is made with a quality gin, especially those with a slight citrus flavor and a great blend of botanicals. One thing to keep in mind is that your gin and tonic is only as good as both the gin and the tonic. Explore some of the great tonic waters that have sprung up thanks to this drink’s resurgence in popularity.
Quinine
Tonic water is a beverage that was first produced in the 1850s. Quinine is a compound with a bitter taste that is extracted from bark of the cinchona tree. The cinchona tree, sometimes called the “quinine plant,” is indigenous to parts of the world including Central and South America, Western Africa and the Caribbean.
It was originally developed centuries ago as a medicine to fight malaria. Since at least the 1800s people have been consuming it to help prevent serious illnesses.
Distillation
There are three distillation techniques that gin distillers use to purify their ethanol and infuse botanicals into the product: steeping, vapor infusion and vacuum distillation. Some distillers use both the steeping and vapor infusion methods and blend each finished product to make a compound gin. Distillation is a process that purifies a liquid by heating and vaporizing it, then collecting the vapor as it recondenses into a liquid. The resulting liquid is considered purer.
Distillation is also one of the extraction processes used in perfumery. This technique consists of capturing essential oil from flowers or plants using water vapor. This very old method is still used nowadays.
